my estrange wife, who ran away leaving me and daughter, keeps her where abouts a secret, and only emails me, when she feels like it, recently said, she hates me.
does she really mean it?

Everyone says it and hate is a very strong word and to say it and mean it, means you have been very bad or something.
Given the suitation you have detailed above i would say yes she means it....back off give her space and time

Well she obviously doesn't like you! But I'm not sure if she "hates" you. It seems like if she really didn't like you she would try to take away your daughter.

If its, "Hi! Just dropping in to say, I hate you!" Well yes in this case it would be true. Selfish or immature, I'd say good riddance and change my e-mail.
