I think that it resembled earth at one time. But perhaps a shift in the planet's axis, or a giant asteroid, changed all that. It is reported to be cold there. But how cold does it get at the Martian equator? There seems to be too much evidence that it has always been dry! I wonder if human-kind will build cities there (protected by a bubble) as shown on the sci-fi TV series Babylon 5?

Massive ice caps at the poles of mars suggest that the ice may have been water at one point. There are crevaces in the surface all over mars and these may be dried-up rivers.

Mars once had running water so it's possible. Maybe even probable since every planet that we know of so far with running water has life (i.e. Earth).

Apparently, Mars once had a magnetic field like Earth. Unfortunately, it diminished over millions of years and thus most of the water got "blown" away by the solar wind.

I think it is doubtful that there was ever anything resembling Earth type animal life on Mars. Eventually there is a distinct possibility that the human race will colonize the Red planet.

Life will form wherever the conditions are right, if current estimates of when and how life formed on Earth are correct, there is no reason to believe that it did not form on Mars.

I agree that mars was probably like earth until it got dragged closer to the sun so they all moved to earth.

I think they were, and died due to the cooling of mars´s core, leaving them unprotected from the deadly solar rays
