Here are several along with some free antispyware applications as well.

Spyware Blocker Tool

This is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources. It blocks spyware before it installs.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)

First of all before you install any new anti-virus, you must remove your old Norton COMPLETLY or risk a major conflict.

As Norton can be a real pain to remove completly you may need to download and run the Norton Removal Tool from the Norton / Symantic website.

I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!

AVG Anti-Virus is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

In test,

after test,

after test,
http://winnow.oitc.com/AntiVirusPerformance.html
etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam, AVG fares poorly.

AVG has proven itself to be a miserable performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.

AVG. = Average, at best!

There are much better free alternatives such as Avria Anti-Vir:

and Avast:

And please do NOT, as one poster suggested, run multiple anti-virus apps. The use of 2 or more anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

And do NOT, as another poster suggested, use your Norton for 30 days without being able to receive updates. New viruses and other malwares are created by the "blackhats" every hour, 24/7. The use of an expired anti-virus that has no updates to detect these new virus variants is simply courting disaster.

Good luck.

when your norton expires the software will still work however it just wont update. so you should still be good with it for at least 30 days. also if you go to www.pctools.com you can get a free antivirus programs that does work but you will have to run the update yourself
as sometime free programs require a little extra work.

I support (mark040477). I believe NOD32 is free, and it's known to be one of the best anti-virus softwares but companies don't want to admit it.

& yes, you should always have ONLY ONE anti-virus software installed in your system.
