I believe that ultrasounds are done once, possibly twice during normal healthy pregnancies. Women that are experiencing high-risk pregnancies often get ultrasounds done quite often to keep a close eye on things.
In other countries, Ultrasounds are done every visit. I was pregnant with my child while living in Europe, and my baby was born happy and healthy.

Ultrasounds are generally considered to be safe, however they really should be used when necessary and not just for giggles. There have been some studies that show potential harm from ultrasounds, but again, these have not been substantiated to the point where folks consider them dangerous. Here's what one article said:

Reasons for Concern
Ultrasound waves are known to affect living tissues in at least two ways. First, the sonar beam heats the highlighted area by about 1°C (2°F). This is presumed to be insignificant, based on whole-body heating in pregnancy, which seems to be safe up to 2.5°C (5°F).21 The second effect is cavitation, where the small pockets of gas that exist within mammalian tissue vibrate and then collapse. In this situation "...temperatures of many thousands of degrees Celsius in the gas create a wide range of chemical products, some of which are potentially toxic."22 The significance of cavitation in human tissue is unknown.

As with any medical procedure, I would talk to your doctor if you have concerns with the safety or necessity of it.

I had 6 ultrasounds over the course of my pregnancy with my son and he is a healthy big boy of 9 months. It uses sound waves not x-rays. Perfectly safe for baby and expectant mother.

There are no known risks with ultrasound. We don't recommend scanning the baby 24/7. All we do is shoot ultrahigh frequency sound waves into the body, what ever the waves hit, it bounces back and then we see it on the screen.

Ultrasounds aren't taken frequently. The usual is once unless the pregnancy is high risk then there are two. Insurance companies will not pay for more than two, most will pay for only one unless it is a high risk pregnancy
