Honesty is the path... truth the goal of life! One cannot be truthful in life without following the path of honesty. Before we can be honest in our worldly dealings... we need to be honest with our real self... our soul the atman within!
Honesty... is being truthful... Is that trait of character following which human beings reach level of Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed! Honesty is mostly practiced in worldly matters. Truthfulness is an attribute of the inner self... the cosmic soul atman within!
Honesty is an essential ingredient of the worldly life. In the field of soul atman... it is absolute truthfulness that plays a governing role. Devoid of absolute truthfulness one cannot distinctly hear the sweet small voice of our soul atman within.
It is the sweet small inner voice of our soul atman within that always guides us on the right path. To travel the uncharted path of spirituality... traveling the path of absolute truthfulness is a must. Unless we are honest in worldly matters... we cannot be truthful otherwise!
Honesty is an ingredient of worldly matters... truthfulness an essentiality on the spiritual path. Assessment... the perception is not related to honesty or truthfulness. In the darkest hour of the night a rope may appear as snake... does not mean one is dishonest or untruthful!
Perception is limited by the senses... an organ of the mind power! To live a life of truthfulness... one needs practicing honesty at each step of life. At times the glass may appear half full... sometimes half empty! Does not matter... honesty paves way for a clear conscience within! In life there are our perceptions of honesty and of truths. They can be really the same, but situations alter the perceptions of the essence of stated facts. Ex. You asked a friend to meet you in the evening because you needed them to give you moral support to accomplish a particular venture. That friend said they would come, but they did not come after all. Now, your initial perception is that this person was being honest and truthful in their acknowledgment that they would come. You depended on that honesty and truth.
A. When they do not show up your perception is that they were not honest and was untruthful (lied is the word you think of out of anger) to you. It's like making a promise then not fulfilling you promise. This exhibits poor integrity, which mean the truth and honesty is of no consequence to them and barely exist within their minds.
B. On the other hand, you could have perceived it by saying that person must have had a situation that prevented them from coming.
So ones perception determines what the honest truths are within individuals. I say honest truths because truths don't have to be honest. Okay, I this last sentence confused you. Think about though. Anything in life depends on how and what we perceive it to be.

even if the 2 people didn't agree on their perception, for each of the what they said was the truth. so is it just perception? no, because truth is absolute. i think the problem is that question is wrong, because the truth is not concerned about the beauty of a painting and honesty. truth is much higher and should not be used on questions regarding these kinds of topics.

It seems to me that it is just perception or an opinion. Except to a politician. The truth to one man may not be the truth to another. The truth to a politician is how much money can he steal from the public without letting them know he is stealing their money and doing it while he is lying to the public. And that my friends, in my opinion, is the truth!

There must be no Absolute truth. In your example both are telling the truth (acording to them)
I think that in matters of the mind and heart theres only perception... or many truths.
In the matters of the brain theres Truth and Lies.

Honesty is the best policy. so can it be considered as a policy to be honest to our own self. "Truth is God", said Mahatma Gandhi. He did not tell honesty is God. Why? I tell you that I am so and so and such and such and later if you find out what i told is wrong you will feel cheated. Now what will you tell I am dishonest to you or not truthful to you. So i think you got the point!

One could ask, 'Is it true that truth exists?' One can also ask, 'Is it true that truth does not exist?' The first can be affirmed by mind, while the latter cannot be affirmed without a gross distortion of sense. If truth does not exist, it would certainly be true that truth does not exist. That is the quality of absolute truth. If the negation were true, one could not ask the question and expect a true answer.
