1. Sharapova has 3845.00 at the moment, while Jankovic has 3429.00. S has 416 points more than J.
2. S will lose 1000-90= 910 points for not defending her title, which leaves her with 2935 points.
3. Jankovic, even if she loses her next match, she will lose 450 (points from her 2006 US Open semifinal) -140= 310, which will leave her with 3119.
So, Jankovic will certainly be better ranked than Sharapova when the new rankings are released.
Uh, I hope I did all the maths right. This was something that interested me too.

What shocking loss....I was expecting this to happen and in
future too, she will loose many more such matches in the
grand slams. Ana Ivokovic and Jankovic has better chance of
winning a grand slam than Sharapova.
She will be ranked some where 4 or 5.
1. Henin
2. Svetlana
3. Jelena
4. Ana I / Sharapova
5. Sharapova/ Ana I
6. Anna Chakvatadze

In 2006, Grand Slam winners were awarded 700 points. In 2007, 3rd round losers are given 90 points, so Sharapova will lose 610 points, dropping her to 3235.
Jancovic is set to lose 314 points but, having made it to the fourth round, will gain back at least 140 of them. Her point total after the US Open will be at least 3255.
Sharapova will fall at least one spot in the rankings to number 3. She can fall to as low as 6th depending on how far Kuznetsova, Ivanovic and Chakvetadze go.
If Kuznetsova makes it to the QF, she will rank higher than Maria. If Ivanovic makes the Final she will rank higher than Maria (actually, she'll tie her if she makes the SF, but Maria would win the WTA ranking tiebreak and would rank higher). Chakvetadze would need to win to pass Maria.

she will gain 62 points but will lose 700 points so that will probably leave her at #5 or a lower ranking, it still depends how the other seeds do and if they have enough points to catch up.
