Personally, i dont think the UK needs to unite with a foreign nation to stay competative at all. Infact we are doing just fine by ourselves.
But to be honest, if we HAD to join someone id rather join the Americans. Atleast we share a similar strength economy, language and culture.
Britain and Europe have little in common.

UK tends to feel as a superpower and it is the reason why it does not want to join the EU.

Ok, maybe is because I'm half English and Spanish, but what's wrong with being European? I have nothing against Americans, but honestly, I'm very proud of being European, although I do feel more Spanish and English. My family is mainly Spanish and English, but it goes back to Ireland, Scotland and France. Why is that some English people refuse to feel European? If that's the case, then fine, it's your choice. But what is so wonderful about USA? Do you really think they are much better than the EU? If that's the case, then why don't you move there?

Several years ago I proposed something called ELTA (English Lands Trade Agreement) It would have put the U.K. Ireland, Canada, the U.S., Australia and New Zealand into a free trade arrangement. At the time those nations were responsible for most of the ocean-going commerce on the planet. I received some postive feedback from several members of various parliaments about my idea. Sadly, all of them were on the opposition benches at the time.

eu is mainly an economic union n now moving into a political union but national govts remain intact. the idea of eu is also to stop any mad govt to take over erp eg another hitler and to stop all wars as far as possible. tts why the east erp nations were admitted quickly and turkey still left out!
this is a matter of geog proximity. usa is too far and no relevance to join. uk is riding hi economically but in todays world u can simply lose the edge.
in some ways eu is living in a dream world. they dont realize tt india / china is capturing global economics. china has captured the african market. and it will continue to grow. hence it is better to join some form of economic union. look at british motor industry - the sun has set on it and they r in dreamland to revive it. china bought over MG and ford is gonna dislodge jaguar. these r still unsellable things in the global market. so england must be careful. it went into problems in the 60/70s and there is no immunity fr such happenings. so lets think +ve and look towards a united world and an interdependent one without losing our national identity

I absolutely agree. But, if we are forced to unite (actually we have since WW2) why not join common true friends like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and my country--The U.S. After all we are all the "rebel boys" from you, but we still unite, share, fight, and protect each other. Personally, as an american, I am thankful we have friends that are mostly former British Colonies. Thanks U.K. for your friendship--you can count on us anytime in the future. We are already forever united but independant. GOD bless our countries.

america of a has a neighbour in Canada, it truly is in many techniques comparable, yet in some significant ones closer to Britain. in spite of each and all the years that have exceeded on account that Canada grew to alter right into a self-governing united states no government has ever seen utilising to connect america of a. If Canada can see adequate distinction then i think of the hollow between us, (Socialist Britain using fact the suited suited likes to call us), and the people could be no longer hassle-free to bridge. the ecu does not rule us. Our government continues to be sovereign and basically accepts ecu regulations using fact we pick to. as quickly as interior america of a they do no longer enable you leave (Civil conflict). the united kingdom government performs a substantial section in formulating ecu coverage and our substantial industries have lobbying operations in Brussels. don't be too optimistic that the stupid rules have been concept up by way of a Frenchman or German, British supermarkets have been prepared advocates of uniformity of produce. we would be plenty extra useful interior the ecu if we paid extra interest to the different worldwide places and not basically France, Germany and Italy. we've a lot of buddies, yet we snub them. Why you may pick to spend tens of millions on helping the U. S. military, or propping up inefficient US agriculture i do no longer understand. Do you think of it extremely is only the ecu that has subsidies?

I agree that the Brits do quite well by themselves, as long as they are not ganged up on[WWII]. At that time we showed our bonds with each other, as Roosevelt encouraged anything we could do[lend lease, etc] to help before we became involved. After we came into the war our priority was beating Germany[even though the Japs had a better shot at hurting us[subs, balloon bombs, etc.] and helping Britain. Even though both countries have war fighting plans against the other, when it came to the nut-cutt-ng, we joined our cousins against all comers, as it should be. One sad thing I am seeing is the muslims are being allowed to run rampant in England and brag that it will be the first European country to become, and be ruled by, Islam!

When you say Britain, do you mean the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland or do you mean England?

I think you mean England. You should not assume that the Welsh, Scottish and Irish would want to leave Europe.

I don't think it would be good for England to become the 51st state of the US.
