It could also be noted that navigation of rivers like the Mississipi and Ohio and many others as well as lakes were crucial to transporting large quantities of goods and raw materials fairly cheaply and with a lot less effort than by land.

I really like this question. I think the answer is that Great Britain is an island. The industrial revolution started there. Trade was facilitated by sea, which was easily accessible and familiar to the English, and the fruits of industry spread through the British empire and to other parts of the world.
