I have AVS antivirus which has now informed me that the licence has expired. It won't let me update or renew the licence. I've tried to uninstall it in order to download Avast antivirus but little blurb says "You must close AVS before you can uninstall".
Can anyone please tell me how to close it so that I can safely remove it.
Thank you.

A everyone. I forgot to specify earlier that I have already tried Add/Remove etc etc, but nothing will work until I close AVS. That's my problem - how do I close it so that I can then do Add/Remove?
Even the provider of AVS, i.e. AOL advises straight to Add/Remove but this will not work.
I am thinking of taking this computer, myself and a baseball bat down the garden for a little Sunday afternoon GBH !

There will be an icon in the other side of the start menu.
Go there and click with your left mouse button.
A window should pop-up and click terminate and try uninstalling.
Other wise, right click the icon and stop the on - access protection.
It should work.
Your program is not uninstalling because it is actually on as it is protecting your computer. You cannot uninstall something while it is actually running!

Not sure what AVS is. However, download Avast. Unplug you internet cable. Now (if you have XP) type msconfig and go to start up options untick the box next to the AVS antivirus. Now reboot. Go to control panel add remove programmes remove your AVS. If it doesn't let you, then go to run type services, find your AVS services, change to disabled (check that the recovery options are set to take no action) and then reboot.
One other option is to just right click on the actual AVS icon in the taskbar and select disable or shut down.
Remeber to install Avast and select boot time scan and reboot before reconecting your internet cable.

If your graphics card cant handle aero without slowing down your computer, you wont be able to use aero. Press the windows logo key+pause|break I think a minimum of a 3.0 score for graphics is required to run Aero. If your card meets this, then Im not sure what the problem is, maybe an application running on your computer that disables Aero(some games do this) If you dont see a score for your computer, you can run the test assessment to see how well it does. If your video card is at a 1.0, you dont have the driver installed and youll need to find out what card you have and download its driver.

Well you can try the aforementioned ideas if you can figure out what all the processes associated with it are. There's probably more than one.
Its easier just to boot the computer in safe mode, however, then uninstall it, and reinstall it with the new license. Or you could just get some different antivirus.

If add-/remove does not do the job.
Open `my computer` click on `programme files` and manually delete the file.
Or...use search to find the offending file and delete it.

Go to the control panel and delete it on >Add/Remove Programs.
Then go on Ebay or to a shop, and buy NortonAntivirus which is very good and worth it. It isn't that expesnive either. It saved our computer from "dying" from some weird virus.
Good Luck.

If you want Avast, download it and save - then close just about everything down. Using control panel, delete your old anti virus, then immediately run your new one.
