Simply announcing "I'm switching to the Democrats!". Instead of being disgraced he would have been lauded as "open-minded'??

Nope. He's a closeted coward. And had he been open about his sexuality, I don't think the voters of Idaho would have gone for it no matter what party he affiliated himself with. The little arrest issue doesn't look good either.

Nope, even a democratic senator who was arrested and pled guilty to this type of crime would come under heavy pressure and more than likely would choose to resign.

That would have gotten him a blanket party. One thing Democrats really dislike is hypocrites.
