I have a 7 year old Black Walnut that lost it's growth tip at about 4 feet. My husband has talked me out of pruning it for the last three years. Now it has bushed out and is creating a canopy that is too low for the location. I need to cut off four of the five limbs that come out at four feet, but I am wondering if I can safly remove that much tree in one winter.

Do not remove more than 1/3 of the crown at any one pruning. Spread out your pruning over multiple years if you need to prune more than this or just consider a new tree. You can promote a side shoot into a new leader. Bend the most promising shoot upward over the central axis of the tree. Use a second side shoot to support the first and tape them together. Prune the tip of the second side shoot to prevent competition. If you do not have a second side shoot to support the first, use a dowel rod taped to the trunk and first shoot. After a growing season you should be able to remove the dowel rod/second supporting shoot.
