You need to phone an isp provider they will supply you with a router or modem. Cost you more for the router

To connect to the internet you need a modem.

To connect to the internet from your wireless lap top you want a wireless modem.

To use it wirelessly you need to attach to a router.
The format for internet connection is either...

--- cable --- cable modem --- wireless router --- PC
or
--- Phone connection ---- ADSL Modem ---- wireless router -- PC

ADSL Modem and associated wireless router can be in a single machine but be careful that you buy an ADSL modem/router in this case.

If the laptop is going to be the only computer accessing the internet you don't need a router if you have another computer then you'd benefit from a router

No.. You need internet access.. You only need a router if you hook up multiple computers.
