I was watching the Red Sox game last night and the pitcher got a no hitter and I was wondering if that was the same thing as a perfect game.

No. in order for it to be considered a perfect game, the opposing team cannot reach base at all, whether through a hit, walk, etc..... a no hittier simply means that - no hits given up. Buchholz had 3 walks in the game. But still, to throw a no-no in only your 2nd major league start is something really special. Clay is going to be someone the Sox are going to keep around for a while.

Go Sox!

Both are considered "no-hitters" but that's where the similarity ends. A perfect game constitutes 27 batters up, 27 batters down. The pitcher does not allow a single base runner to reach first base. There can't be any errors on the part of the defensive team in order to preserve the perfect game.

A "standard" no-hitter does not necessarily have to be a perfect game. There can be errors on the part of the defense and the pitcher may, during the course of the game, walk a batter or two. Just as long as he doesn't give up a clean hit during the game he would be credited with a "no-hitter".

Not exactly. A no-hitter is a game where the pitcher(s) does not allow a hit, but people may still reach base via walks, hit batsmen, or errors. A perfect game is a game in which no one on a team reaches base. Three turns of the lineup, 27 consecutively retired batters.

No hitter & a perfect game are 2 different things. A no hitter is when u allow no hits but u allow a walk or an error. A perfect game is when u allow no hits no errors & no walks.

no. a perfect game is when a pitcher dosen't allow an error, walk, balk, a hit or throw a wild pitch. a no hitter is when he may have done one or more of the previous things, but still did not allow a hit.

No, a no hitter means they didn't get a hit off you. A perfect game mean no walks or hits. Randy Johnson did this a couple of years ago, it was awesome. Go D-Backs, and I hope the big unit recovers from his surgery soon.

No, in a perfect game NO ONE reaches base (no hits, no walks, nobody reaches on an error)....in a "no-hitter" there are only NO HITS.
