I have a TRANE. Got home and the house was hot. Checked unit outside, and the fan was stuck, and it was hot. I cooled it with the hose, then push started it, then it started running. Later it stopped again.

I turned off the power and took it apart. Since the fan would start and stop, and a little noisy, I suspected that. I removed the fan. The shaft to the motor had a little rust. I flipped it and let machine oil go in. I also added machine oil to a hole in the bottom of the motor. There was mulch from leaves at the bottom of the casing, by the compressor. I cleaned that out the best I could. I put it all together, and it seems to be working again.

I am assuming there is no obvious blockage like a twig that fell into the fan blades - but check this out too.

If the fan kicks out as you indicate and is over heated as you indicated, it sounds like the fan motor itself is overloaded and / or defective. Check and see if the moter is the type that needs oil or grease - and if so oil or grease it. Most are no longer the type you lube so if you do not see lube spots, lube is not the issue. The motor should be cool enough from air movement so it does not overheat but since this is not the case, the motor itself then needs to be replaced.

While replacing it, I would also replace the start up capacitor. Since you can start the motor, it is probably OK but they are fairly inexpensive so I would replace it also. Make sure you get one with the same voltage size and at least the same capacitance (in micro Farads or uF).

You have one or two problems. First the run capacitor for the fan should be replaced. Then if the motor does not work properly it should be replaced. For more info go to the air conditioner page at www.hvac-for-beginners.com
