Lucky you, it's a beautiful place and full of charm. We did not feel worried at any times and even at night we felt safe. However we did not go into any of the pubs and clubs and I have heard some stories about Brits being conned out of money in them.
All I can say is that all the restaurants we ate in were extremely good value, the patrons were very accomodating and the food was wonderful.
There is a hotel in the old town which is the tallest building there, you can go up to the top and sit in the Sky Bar and watch the world go by (I think it may be a Radisson). Later on its very clubby but it was full of very trendy people who seemed to be having a great time.
There is a huge indoor market which is great fun to walk around, also there is a large shopping complex just outside the old town.
A visit to the park in the old town is a must, it's very pretty and great just to stroll around. Just by this park is a lovely row of shops which is down a cobbled street, all of the shop fronts are painted yellow and at one end is a basement coffee shop that does wonderful hot chocolate.
You just need to walk round and explore, there are loads of little cobbled alleyways that lead to little shops and cafe's.
You'll have a lovely time.

Riga has a lot of history, and museums showing that. Some nice markets and stores.
Good places to eat and spend the night.
It is still a lot cheaper than western Europe.
Watch out for the same things as you would at home, like pickpockets, thieves. Be careful around dark alleys at night and do not go into parts of town that seem wrong somehow.
And watch for traffic.

It is the capital commercial heart of Latvia. It is a very historic area with alot of ruins from the war. There are also alot of old buildings with alot of history and art to them. keep your wits about you when walking round as it is still quite a poor town.

watch out for cars approaching fast if your standing in the middle of the freeway.
