It means the period of getting to know each other, whether you click, whether you want to take anything further and have a relationship together. Sex can be part of it or not, makes no difference. Just means you're still road-testing a possible partner or you just want to have fun with someone

Everyone needs a friend like you, huh, one who says if you don't have sex with me you compromise our friendship? Nice. I actually used to have friends I had sex with, both as one night stands and in a more regular "friends with benefits" kind of way. And was in an open relationship for about six months, which ended amicably as we drifted apart and I found someone new. Obviously I think it's fine to have casual sexual relationships, but they are not usually good friends, as the "friendship" usually disappears more or less as soon as you stop having sex, especially if one of you starts a relationship with someone else. I would never judge someone for having sex with a friend, but I don't think really close friends having sex is a good idea because it can get very complicated if one or the other ends up having more feelings or when one does get into a relationship. Would you rather have a shag and lose your friendship or resist the urge and keep your friendship? (Your answer to that will tell you whether or not you actually care anything about the so-called friend in question)

Dating is the process of getting to know someone. Going out together and spending time together. Sex comes in when you two decided to take it on a higher level... & would like to see where it leads...

Some people can do casual sex on a date, some cant. It depends on the person.

1) If you are religious, it means getting to know the other person better as a potential life partner. Sex is only for marriage.

2) If you are non-religious/secular/agnostic or whatever, then there's nothing stopping you two from having sex.

It depends on the context, but it is more than just friendship.

It used to be the process of getting to know another with a view to making a long term committment.

There will be a sexual component to the relationship - but it doesn't necessarily mean having sex.

Trust me--it means whatever the person who says it wants it to mean. When my ex was trying to get me back, he swore up and down that he wasn't "dating" anyone. I took that to mean he was basically living like a hermit. Turns out he meant that, while he was going on tons of dates (and having tons of sex), he wasn't "serious" about anybody.

I think dating is the preliminary stages of 'going out' or being more serious. It means getting to know eachother and definitely comes before sex.
