It's A, but it's not a perfect answer.

There were three battles broadly at that location, which marked the high water mark of the Axis advance into Egypt.

First Alamein, in July 1942: the British under Auchinlek, having retreated, just managed to fight to a standstill Rommel's much depleted and tired mobile and armoured forces which had been pursuing them.

In August 1943 Rommel having to an extent regrouped and resupplied, made a more organised attempt to breat through the British positions: the battle of Alam el Halfa.
The 8th Army had just come under the command of General Montgomery, but the disposition of troops which provided the successful defensive strategy were, at least in part, those of his predecessor..
It was at *this* battle that supplies and air power supplied what was the turning point.

By the time of the second battle of El Alamein in late October, the result was hardly in doubt. The disparities in air forces, fuel, artillery ammunition were all extreme.

Have to agree with Pedestal 42. It was all a case of cause and effect. If one had happened not happened then neither would any of the others. If however, you really push it to find the chicken then it would have to be A

C never happened.
D didn't happen until later, well after the North African campaign.
