I know there might be a few medical people answering questions but it is all at long range, rather like NHS direct, When a more detailed examination is required. What annoys me,as a man , is the dozens of queries from ladies " am I pregnant" How do we know? And the scores of questions about monthly periods, Do we really want to know about these things. OK there might be a few legitimate medical based questions that other peoples experiences or knowledge can help, but not all that many. A PS after reading the replies above. It seems finance is another major reason.. This is a big difference between here(UK) and the USA. Here there is no charge for seeing your GP(MD) or for hospital or A and E (ER) attention so all professional advice and treatment is free. Also in the UK there is a free out of hours doctor service who call to home. An NHS direct phone or Internet service where immediate advice can be obtained also emergency paramedic or emergency ambulance services in really urgent cases.. So in UK the need to refer to this site for advice is possibly not so great as in the USA. or other countries.

I ask many questions here about pregnancy. I don't live in the States or the UK and I do not have a midwife or ante natal classes etc... My gynaecologist is a four hour journey away and although there is a hospital where I live there is no maternity section so to speak (I have to travel to another island to give birth)
Please don't presume that the people who ask questions are stupid, we don't all have the resources available that some others have. Whenever i ask a question about pregnancy I always have to justify why I am asking it and always get some sacrastic comments and I'm sick of it.
Other people just want to share their concerns and experiences with others, you can ask anything you want on this site, if you think the question is stupid then don't answer it!!!

I think maybe because ppl are frustrated with trying to get their doctors to call them back or even get appointments...or maybe it's a money issue. Who knows....maybe they hope it's nothing. Yes, sometimes it's attention seeking, but I feel for ppl (I'm a health care provider) who have no insurance (crappy insurance) and they have to pay a fortune just to be told their is nothing wrong or it's all in their head. I think they come here for another perspective and to see if others have had similar experiences. There are a lot of bad doctors out there who don't care about people....they care about money...not by choice, but dictated by the practice they work for. Now some ?? are downright ridiculous....my kid has a fever of 105...what should I do? Not appropriate....but some ?? I can see why they would come here and give up on their MD's.

You where kind of a jerk to her. A simple question like that why ask a doctor when you know half of the people on here would know the answer. If your wife has had three children you should even know the answer to that one. Some questions I understand that you should be in the E.R. instead of wasting time on the internet but others that your going to call the Dr but in the mean time you want to know what to expect before you do there is no harm in that. Don't read those questions if it bothers you that much.

Having a sick child can be very very overhelming and with the age of computers we think all the answers are inside our boxes.
I also think, finding out as much information about what is wrong with your child before going to the doctor/ER is a good thing, as many parents are too quick to run to the hospital.
I do agree people should rely more on their own instincts and not us muppets, but I'm sure we've helped shed light on many minor illnesses that do not need immediate medical attention, and saved so outragious medical bills for a runny nose.

i always ask a gp
im pregnant with triplets and im never off the phone to my doctor and midwife at the moment.
its better to be safe than sorry.
i think sometimes ppl want reasurance from answers, they want someone to say oh things will be fine dont worry you will be ok...
at the end of the day if your ill your ill and you gotta face it.. sometimes the only thing is the doctor.
i understand some of the pregnancy questions tho can be because pregnancy is so confusing and if you have to run to the docs with every tiny thing then it would be terrible but i cant complain lol im almost on the phone to the doc every other day..

I think with a lot of the questions eg 'Am I pregnant?' the asker doesn't want the actual 'yes' or 'no' - they want reassurance, and someone who knows a bit more about it to give them advice. I would say that most people go to a GP anyway - this just gives them somewhere to start and makes them feel they have someone to talk to. Really, if you think the questions are so stupid, you're not under any compulsion to answer them.

I think that with the medical questions people do not want to seem foolish in front of their doctors...
I can remember being told i was neurotic every time i took my son to the doctors...he had a high temperature and was acting odd...but i had a feeling until one day i refused to move from the doctors surgery until they looked at him...he was rushed into hospital with a severe urine infection....
sometimes doctors do not listen so many try and arm themselves with as much knowledge as possible...also if you live in the UK...Have you tried speaking to your doctor...some days its virtually impossible and as for an appointment for many there is a 1 week wait...
People ask for advice because they are unsure...that does not make them idiots

people like you annoy me so much.
yahoo answers has a health section and also a pregnancy section, so why shouldn't people be able to ask questions in those sections without people like you having a go at them. if you don't like the questions people ask then why do you answer them? those 'stupid questions' you refer to are real peoples problems and may be coming from a scared 14 year old who cannot talk to anyone else, not everybody is as perfect as 'you and your wife' who 'always see their doctor and not ask the yahoo answers community'
so bloody what. get a life and stop stressing about what others are asking.

Theres many good reasons, out of surgery hours;their doctor isnt interested in their complaint or knows nothing about it.
They want a clearer picture of what may be wrong with them to save the doctors time and speed up a diagnosis and treatment.
