A few words from a friend of mine who is a steward at Coventry City Football Club below. This is in the aftermath of the Coventry City vs Preston North End match.

Were you at the game? Were you involved in the violence afterwards?

Feel good about yourselves?

From yesterday's match.

"It's currently 9.20pm and i've been home from football for around 45 minutes. I went there today really looking forward to a great game (which it was) Sadly it was ruined at the end by 150+ thugs who started a fight in the car park with the Preston fans. I've taken a number of punches and kicks but managed to evade the broken glass bottles, bricks and stones that were raining down on us. There were no police there today. Although i remain mostly unscathed, a number of stewards were injured. Sadly a steward has suffered a fatal heart attack as a result of this violence. Everything possible was done but to no avail.
What really p***es me off is that the majority of mindless w**kers will be back next week totally oblivious to result of their actions. It seems so sad that a good man should lose his life over some worthless piece of **** who couldn't care less.
**** happens...........but not like this, and it will not be forgotten.
Martin H. RIP."

Ok, time to rewind...sort of. This morning i was summoned to the Ricoh for a meeting regarding the previous nights events. The safety officer then told me what had happened. Last night two paramedics who attended the steward, entered his office holding the stewards i.d pass and said how sorry they were but he had passed away, the management team were then informed, hence my earlier post. This morning he rang the hospital to "tidy up the loose ends" only to be told he was in the critical unit!! It transpires that the original paramedics stayed at the Arena and a different crew took him away. At this point he was indeed dead but somehow was revived. He is now under heavy sedation and unconscious....but alive. At this time he is still not expected to survive once they bring him round and if by some miracle he does, they have no idea what his mental state will be after being deprived of oxygen for so long.

The words above are from my friend.

Although the man has not died, that doesn't make this any less revolting.

Thanks all for your responses. I won't be picking a best answer - I'll let you vote for one.

I want to leave this up, in the hope that some of the scum who did this might read it and maybe feel SOME remorse.

Thanks again.

The football yobs ruin the atmosphere and day out for everyone. They are horrible, selfish bags of scum. They waste police time and money. If they want to fight eachother why don't they organise their fights in a sports arena so we could all come and watch them kill eachother from a safe distance! And put bets on who will win, we could have a "footie thugs" league table and an annual FA cup punch up to determine the champions!!

Hooliganism is totally unjustified.
I am petrified to go to football matches with my football 'crazy' 9-yr old son.

That's really sad.
I absolutely HATE football violence with a passion! Always have, since my dad stopped going to matches after getting started on. Theres no excuse for it. It makes me ashamed to be English when they start abroad at England games.

My condolences to your friend x

Hooligan must be tackled before it is too late. Every party must make sure that hooliganism is tackled before it becomes a norm in football..
