Its a tradition to give money in increments of $18. The word life adds up to taht number so its considered a blessing.

answer: Zero should be the amount if that is what you're focused on, young one. This is the time a young man or woman are becoming obligated to the commandments and their own behavior. A gifting of ANY kind is just that - a gift, not an expectation and not a requirement. added: yes, many that have an official ceremony do donate the majority of monies received to charity - that is one of the mitzvah (commandments) charity.

If he is such a close friend, don't just give him money, it shows that there is little thought gone into his present. Decide on your budget and go out and spend it on a real present. A pen or a wallet is traditional, but you could buy him a computer game, or anything related to what interests him.

$50 should be fine, that will buy him a video game and besides to a kid just getting his Bar Mitzvah, that should be a lot of money,
BTW Congradulate him for me while you are at it.

Whatever you can easily afford =) I would say anywhere from $35-$50 will be fine.

Shouldn't the amount be related to your budget? What can you afford?
