Because he is the quarterback, his job is to get through enemy territory. Think of Football like War, the quarterback is the point man, he must get the ball to the end zone much like in war the point man must get to the enemy headquarters to blow it up. Instead of a bomb in football it is a ball. Just like in war, the enemy wants to bring down that point man at all cost, under no circumstances is that point man to get to the headquarters and blow it up, in football under no circumstances is the quarterback to get to the end zone with that foot ball!
