my speech professor taught our class some tips to improve on pronunciation.

1. read books aloud. - this may seem stupid when done in a room with a lot of people, but you can ask one or two friends to come listen to you once in a while. this is important so that you will know if other people can understand what you are saying. however, you can do it while you are alone if you are uncomfortable doing it in front of another person. try recording it so you can listen to it afterwards.
2. if it doesnt sound right, it probably is wrong. - sometimes there's just nothing wrong with your pronunciation, sometimes it's how you think a word should be read or said. for example, the word cupboard - "cup-board" sounds wrong (and uncomfortable to the lips), and we know that it is wrong.
3. if you dont know what a word means, check its meaning. - this is important. you can get clues as to how to pronounce a word if you know either what it means or the root word.
4. think first before speaking. - think of what you want to say first before saying it. this minimizes the usual "uhhh... ummm...." which isn't really nice to listen to. thinking ahead would also eliminate stuttering and mispronunciation of some words.

as for the accent, sometimes if the language you want to improve on (such as english) is not your primary language, you can carry on the accent of your primary language when speaking in english. unless practiced thru regular conversations with primary english users, it's very hard to develop the accent. if you are really unhappy with how you sound, maybe you should try taking ESL (english as second language) classes. they can teach you proper pronunciation and accent neutralization.

If you are talking about the stereotypical English accent you associate with a man in a bowler hat, then I'd agree but by saying British, I guess you mean the regional accents too and the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland accents? In which case, plain is simply not a word I'd use to describe any of them. Have you heard Scouse or Geordie accents? Kunta - your name is giving me a clue here. And exactly what the f**k is a zemmie?

If you are in an English speaking country communicate as much as you can with the local, otherwise you need to listen to native speakers: use TV, radio, tape etc and try to imitate them. Good luck!

if you google "the online dictionary" and then, once youve found the site, type in the word yu need to say. it has a little button shaped like a megaphone that says the word the way that is pronounced.
