I get this sometimes and I usually manage to kick the missus in the process. Probably some pulse from the brain rearranging your body systems in preparation for sleep. I often have a mini dream that causes this to happen. I dream I am kicking a ball or some similar activity.

I've done it before but usually when I'm overly exhausted. I do have startling dreams upon falling asleep which will sometimes jolt me awake.
I've also noticed an odd sort of twitchy feeling after taking valerian root for sleep. It makes you dream like crazy though.
Try taking a hot shower before bed to relax your body and loosen your muscles.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress,
dietary and medical problems. By making
small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly,
insomnia can be cured. I found the information

It sounds like potassium deficiency. This may sound daft but try eating a banana about 1 hour before bedtime.

I hate when that happens! It happens when I'm like half a sleep. Like I am awake but it's like I am dreaming.
I think you must have something on your mind when it happens. That's when it happens to me.
