It all depends on the type of restaurant, for example many buffet restaurants that have very good food are great, like Chinese buffet or stake house buffet. The Country Cupboard is very good!
But you might think a buffet restaurant needs no service but that is wrong. the waitress (if you could call her that in this case) she is very important she gets your plates when you are done so you have room to bring back other things. So being very attentive is important for any waitress. Friendly service is important as well, you don't want to be served by someone that looks like you might set off her last nerve for the day! lol
Good food and portions for the prices are also good, I was talking with my teacher over this a while back and she said food should have portion choices.
For example I could eat a big cheese stake but my date she might be smaller than me and can't eat as much, so what does not put on weight to me might put on a lot for her, so that is not fair to her that she has to get the same portion I get.
Comfortable booths or tables and chairs are another good thing, also the looks of the place, it should look nice with paintings on the walls. Even fast food places have some pictures on the walls.

Sorry, E, but "good service," is a top priority. What I hate is servers coming over and saying something, like, "Hi. I'm Erik, I'll be your waiter for this evening." I feel like answering, "Okay, I'm Elaine, this is Bill, Jeanne and Don. So, what's up and how's the family?"
I've never called a server by name and never intend to do so. As in any other job or profession, but especially when it comes to food, I look for a professional person who does his/her job in a smiling, but distant manner. It's important that the food be presented properly, that it looks good on the plate, and that the server remembers who ordered what. Of course, I'm not talking about fast food restaurants, where it's expected that the counterpeople throw the food at you and then you go and sit down at a dirty table, next to which the cleaning staff is washing the floors with pine-scented dirty water, the odor of which permeates the food. I haven't been in one of those places for years, but I imagine things haven't changed much.

Happy Labor Day to you!
For me, first of all, service is important. By that I mean, that I'm not kept waiting too long for a table. When I'm seated, it doesn't take too long to get a menu. Then, the waitperson comes along before too long to take the order. I want my food hot and per my instructions. If I say "medium well" for the steak, it does not mean "medium." If I say "crispy" for the bacon, I don't want it soggy and half cooked. I like for the waitperson to be friendly and in a good mood. When I get coffee, I expect them to come back and fill the cup at least one time. I should not have to ask for a refill. After I get the food, the waitperson should come back a minimum of one time to ask if everything is okay. I do not expect them to be out of anything I order which is on the menu. I don't like to get the feeling that they want me to hurry and leave so they can get another party at the table. I want to take my time to enjoy my food. Oh, and I don't like the tables to be too close together so you feel like everyone is listening to your conversation.
