We would prefer to stay in a family owned bed and breakfast or kibbutz type place on the Dead Sea- doesn't have to be luxurious. Any suggestions? This will be our first trip. We also hope to visit Jerusalem but prefer to stay around the Dead Sea.

The kibbutz hotel at Ein Gedi may be your best bet (check out www.ngedi.com). Further south at Ein Boqeq are the five-star hotels with prices to match, while any further north than Ein Gedi is inside the West Bank where there are lots of nice beaches but not so much in the way of accommodation. The road from Jerusalem to Ein Gedi does take you through the West Bank, but it is a very safe road so you won't need to worry, and it is very scenic descending into the desert from Jerusalem. But if you prefer you can alternatively take the much longer route round via Be'ersheva.
