we were just talking about it at work, and this guy says, yes, an employer can lower your pay, if he so chooses to less than what you started at.....I say that isn't right, but he says he's right. Tried looking it up, but can't find anything related to that question....
I know somewhere someone smarter than myself is out there, and can settle this discussion!!! If you do know, could you provide a link if possible?....thanks

It may depend on what State you live in or if you are under a union contract or some other protected pay plan. But the basic answer is yes, most people are hired "at-will" of the employer, so while it may be a poor PR move, they may reduce your pay. (of course the Federal and/or State mininum wage must be met also) This would also apply to benefits.

Yes,

I have seen major companies do this including Airlines. Even Unions make concessions from time to time to hep the company.

Bottom line the company can reduce ones pay there is no law against it. Usually pay reductions are based on company profits or low performance levels.

But...This isn't the norm. Most companies don't reduce ones pay unless the company itself is in serious financial trouble.

Yes- many companies have started asking the staff to 'adjust' their earnings so that the company can "compete in the marketplace more successfully".

Or some such claptrap.

I don't see a problem with this IF-
when times get better, the wages adjust upward again, and
the CEO/COO/CFO whatever doesn't get a fat bonus before the peons get repaid.

There's no way to answer a legal question without knowing where you are (and thus, the controlling law).

As a general proposition, salary could be lowered...the trick is that the boss has to make sure it's not discriminatory, etc. If it's just a case of economics, he's free to lower it and you're free to say "I ain't working for that."

Unless you have a signed employment agreement (through a union or individually), an employer can modify your pay at his discretion.

They can, but it is unethical of them to do so. Some employers use this ploy to get rid of people who they no longer want in their employment.
