As a good friend, try to make him good. U can do so by asking him why does he behave like that. Make him aware that his behaviour makes many people to stay away from him. sometimes it may hurt someone also. He should know that being good has many merits - a good person is liked by everyone.
Ur 'mean' friend is lucky to have a good friend like u who is concerned about him. Go and set an example for him. it may take some time but have patience

If you like your friend and want to remain friends then it shouldn't matter if he is mean or not. Obviously you are friends with him in the first place... On the other hand if he is mean with you ( I don't know why you would want to be treated like that), you should sit down and talk with him. He may not be trying to be mean it may just be his personality!

ummmm screw your friend. if they are mean, why are you hanging around them. don't surround yourself with negative people. it will only bring you down and make you see life in a more pessimistic way. if you don't want to totally abandon your friend, point out to them that they need to be more optimistic because its not healthy to be very mean all the time and maybe guilt them by saying how it upsets you. =]
if all else fails say they are emo and no one likes emo kids and the least he can do is become scene.

You can talk to him. Actually, I have a friend that is very mean to me. I just ignore her, and if she really pissed me off. I will tell her some things that she needs to know.

Ditch him. I know that's probably not the answer you are looking for, but people never change unless they choose to. Even then it will take a long time for them. He shouldn't be your friend if he is mean to you anyways.

You cant MAKE anyone BE anything. Just find a nice friend instead. Tell your mean 'friend' that you dont like mean people.

You can't change people, remember that, it will save you so much drama in life. I knew someone like that and it turned out he was hooked on drugs.
