What I mean is to leave them home for a couple of hours, let say to go to the movies or run an errand.

Generally speaking, this is not free reign to leave a three year old home alone, instead, it leaves it up to the interpretation of law enforcement to determine whether you put your child at risk by leaving them home alone, regardless of their age.

I'd say 12 or 13 for being gone that long. There are so many factors to consider - safety of your neighborhood, maturity of your child, awareness of your child of how to cope with emergencies like the house catching fire, the police coming by, a gas line breaking on the street?

In many states, Yes. In Alabama it is 12. In some states it is as old as 14, and in other as young as 7. What state are you in?
