yes, the 3 gallon jar is fine for a betta. just make sure you learn all you can about taking care of bettas. water changes are your friend.

I had a few feeder guppies in my tank. the problem with them is that they tend to nibble on every little thing, including other fish's fins, which is just bad news for your betta.

yes feeder guppies will die without oxygen. I've kept feeder guppies in a jar for 2 weeks and they were able to live that long. (I put them there and forgot out them!) I think the reason they died is waste build up.
and guppies will eat everything. if you have pellets, smash them up in really small flakes and dust and feed them like that.

bettas breathe from the top so they can survive fine without a filter to put oxygen in the water. guppies aren't so lucky. if you did frequent water changes -- like every other day -- you could keep guppies maybe. guppies are alot more sensitive to water conditions then bettas are too.

i would suggest you just start with a betta in the animal cracker jar and save pennies for an aquarium with a heater and filter if you want to ad more fish. you can get a 10 gallon at walmart for not much -- i think 40.00 (including filter, hood, light, heater) -- and it would be a great home for a betta and a school of small fish.

it doesn't matter what kind of fish you get, they all need a filter

and bettas and guppys need a heater as well

the so called feeder guppys are just regular guppys bred in mass for the purpose to be fed to bigger fish like oscars

your betta will thrive if you give him a heater and a filter, and besides apple snails you shouldn't add anything els in that small bowl

Also get live plants, bettas love to rest on them

your temperature is suppose to be around 76-82 degrees

Hope that helps
Good luck

In a 3 gallon jar, you don't need to put other fish in with the betta. He will NOT get lonely. His water will stay cleaner if he's by himself and that will be much healthier for him.

What temperature is the room you'll have him in? He'll be okay without a filter if you're very committed to keeping his water fresh, but he really needs to be in at least 76dF water, preferably 78dF in order to thrive. Lower temps keep him constantly chilled and make him susceptible to infections and illnesses.
