Commonly known as Geocaching.

This is the "official website" for the game/sport/hobby/whatever.

Letterboxing is an interesting pastime, but doesn't primarily use GPS in locating boxes. It uses mostly navigational techniques that a Victorian-era British explorer would be familiar with, compass headings, paces (rather than meters or feet), and a variety of "secret" clues.

Geocaching also doesn't care as much for secrecy as letterboxing - which virtually requires it. Geocaching also can include a "virtual" cache (now known as a "waymark"), one where you simply go to the coordinates and take a picture - there's no box, and no other physical souvenirs.
