Everyone has the right to name their own child. A child would feel special knowing the parent thought and thought and finally chose that uniquie name just for him or her.

People who ask questions about baby names should be prepared to hear what people think of them. If the name is actually bad enough for the child to get teased, it is respectful to tell the parent for the sake of the child. You get what you ask for. There is not one name out there that everyone will like. It's okay to be unique, but some people go over the top. You are right, in the end the parents get to make the choice, and that's the right you have for going through the long hours of child birth and such. But, if someone asks for my opinion, I give them my honest opinion, and sometimes they don't like it. Oh well, you can't please everyone.

In my opinion, when someone answers a question about "what to name a child" they are putting themselves in the place of the child"....for example if the child was sitting in the 1st grade classroom..and the teacher is calling the roll.....and she says...Johnny, Jane, Bill, Rafael, Simone, and then a strange sounding name....they children are going to laugh and snicker and probably tease the child with the strange sounding name...and it becomes the child's problem all their life....so if the parent stops and thinks about what to name their child then they are acting in the best interest of their child..and not their own ideas that might not go well with their new born who has to deal with it the rest of their lives....just my opinion...

I agree that you ought to name the child whatyou want.
That is why I try to be diplomatic even when I don't like the name--it isn't my choice. And even when it isn't MY question, I get offended when people say stuff like 'Ewwww--i HATE it!'
I try to work with what I'm given... And often, I simply combine the names on the list--people know what they want unless they actually SAY they don't...

well it's partly because the questioners ask. but some people just sound stupid when they answer baby name questions. saying things like "oh well the kids at school are gonna tease them, and call them cash register" or something ridiculous like that. like what school did they go to as kids? if anyone makes fun of my kid's name, my kid has the right to make fun of their name, or head shape, or whatever. and if they get in trouble for it, then it's gonna be a problem between me and that teacher. that's just my opinion.

I think it may be because people are asking their opinions about what to name their kid. If you don't want people's opinions, don't ask. As for your "right to name your child a unique and fancy name" sure...but when you do so, keep in mind that your child is also his or her own person, and will someday be an adult...keep that in mind when picking a name.

Here's an even better question:
Why do people get on Yahoo Answers and ask a mob of total strangers, "Do you like these names?" "What's your opinion on this name?" "Should I name my baby....?" and then get upset when people give them answers? Can't have it both ways!

Its because people ask our opinion on that subject. So that's what i do, give my opinion. Does not mean they have to take it. of course you and everyone else have the right to name their own child.
