Someone who does something for personal gain. For example an attention whore will do whatever it takes to get attention. Attention is their gain no matter if it is good attention or bad attention.
Another definition for a whore, is someone who sleeps around with whoever they can find who is willing to.

When I was growing up, a "whore" was anybody who slept around with just anybody, to make a name for herself. Sometimes she would be paid to sleep with someone and other times she wouldn't. She always wore the shortest skirts or outfits she could find, wore "wild" makeup (like the so-called "gothic" makeup now), etc. In either case, just being seen with her gave you a bad name, too. "Prostitute" was the NICE word for it.
