Bush says he wants to spread the ideals of democracy to all corners of the planet. And that includes Iraq.
He fears that the unrest in Iraq could spillover and affect the entire Middle East region, which is a vital oil supplier.

After the war was won, we could not just leave - too much chaos and the likely effect would be worse for the world then the Ba'athist regime. The initial 'plan as we go' was to quickly build up the new republican government and leave but radical Islamacists from outside Iraq were able to set off a civil war along sectarian lines making the government a waste of space. Now we are stuck in something similar to what the British had in Northern Ireland and that took 38 years until the two sides killed enough of each other to decide to work things out at the table. In the mean time, all the British could do was to absorb losses and wait them out. Time will tell whether or not the Americans are smart enough to see the truth like the British did or allow something that is good for the whole world in the long run to be a total waste of American, British, Polish, and others and Iraqi lives. Recent US history says the cut and run crowd will win, however, as was done on the eve of victory in Vietnam (historians are in agreement that the Tet offensive was a decisive US victory that all but annihilated the Viet Cong).

Iraq is a "cornerstone" country. If an opposing force gains a foothold, they will have access to resources and a location that will allow them to wage war successfully on just about anyone.
More so than that, there is the issue of the oil reserves in and around Iraq. Iraq has the world’s second largest proven oil reserves. According to oil industry experts, new exploration will probably raise Iraq’s reserves to 200+ billion barrels of high-grade crude, extraordinarily cheap to produce. The four giant firms located in the US and the UK have been keen to get back into Iraq, from which they were excluded with the nationalization of 1972.
You will find wars today are more about capitol than freedom. The saddest truth is that the truest motivation would make most want to pull soldiers out.

It saddens me teens have to be concerned about such things
And you have every right to be confused. Our world is full of double messages and double standards, hard sometimes for any of us to understand completely, Sorry to say, my belief
is that this war is mainly about oil, power and greed of the
super rich, cover up by reasons of ancient old religious views
of eastern Indians. The east has most always had tribial wars,
Many Americans are against the Iraq war and believe we were lied to by President Bush for reasons to go to war, Some Americans agree with the war and this plays alot with
the poticial. there is much more but that should suffice.

The link below is for Public Law #107-243 which authorized the use of military force against Iraq. The reasons are clearly outlined in this law.

Some of these answers are close.
The real reason we are over there is because Saddam decided to start trading his oil for the Euro. This would have cut the United States out of the picture. It was more than Bush could handle. That's why our Government "stagged" a false flag attack (911) and began the invasion. It's really nothing new. America has been doing this for years. See "Operation Northwoods."

not something is hard to appreciate there. yet you have not made a ingredient. Are you quite so ignorant to have faith that the "libs" do not prefer democracy in Iraq? needless to say they do. Liberals carry individual sovereignty and Liberties on the utmost point...or do you not understand that liberals have been given their label from the affection of Liberties? the subject people who do not help the conflict have is they understand that the US does not arise with the money for, time, or defense force ability to "win" in Iraq. this implies we are able to realize purely killing hundreds greater harmless civilians in Iraq, and US troops with the top result being the suited comparable by using fact the present mess...purely like Vietnam.
