Epistemology means the study of what is meant by "knowledge". What does it mean to "know" something as opposed to merely having an opinion. This issue has been at the core of Western philosophy since before Socrates, since, until it has been answered, all other questions become unsolvable.

Epistemology is the study of what can be "known" versus that which cannot. It is often referred to in conjunction with "ontology", which is basically the study of what is "real". Plato, for example, felt that it was not possible to know true reality (his epistomology) because everything in this world was merely a "copy" of a perfect representation of that thing, which existed only in the world of "forms". So Plato's ontology basically was based on his belief that nothing in this world was real, but merely a copy, an illusion. Hope this helps.
