I know you're supposed to take nothing extra but seriously, what would you grab? I always told myself, I would grab my keys, purse and an extra pair of clothes. Silly huh? The reason why I ask is because the fire alarm just finished going off and I had to think what the awful noise was and ran and grabbed my son who was asleep. Also grabbed a pair of pants and managed to put them on while moving. (if I tried it now, i probably couldn't do it because i just had a baby.) And my keys so I could lock the door, given I live in a tower(apartment).

In 1980, I lived in a dorm in college. The university was a small one, in a small town, and the dorm had yet to be upgraded, safety-wise. There were no actual fire alarms, so drills consisted of designated girls running up and down the halls, knocking on doors, yelling, "Fire Drill!" In the event of a real fire, the "Drill" part would be dropped. The front doors still had to be locked and unlocked with a key.

We had always been told that, if there was a fire, to grab a towel, wet it if possible, and to run down the hall and outside with our faces covered by our wet towels.

So, when there actually WAS a fire in December of that year (a smoker left her cigarette burning on the couch next to our real Christmas tree), it was interesting to see what actually DID get grabbed and taken out. It was 2a.m. I was too tired to study for finals anymore, so I was reading my Bible and getting ready for bed.

I grabbed my Bible and ran out barefooted, cutting my foot on glass in the parking lot. A gal down the hall grabbed her Oilers trashcan. Another gal grabbed her little green plant. WHen we all finally got out and to the "meeting place" across the street, we were sooty, bloody (some of us), and carrying with us a wide assortment of articles... none of us had a wet towel.. and nobody knocked on doors, yelling, "Fire!"

Nowadays, I would think first of my beloved dog... she is elderly and getting weaker, so I'd carry her myself. The cats hopefully would bolt through the door when I opened it. SO, besides the dog and the cats, I would hope to have the presence of mind to grab my truck keys.

After the college experience, though, I can't say for sure how things would go, if there were a fire in my little duplex.
