I'm 15 years old, homeschooled, and I was wondering what does it take to get into Notre Dame and what are the chances of getting in? I've heard it's very hard to get into and you have to get straight A's all your life. In Junior High, I didn't do to well. Now I'm in 9th Grade and I get all A's and B's. Will I still have a chance if I continue getting A's and B's? Thank you!

I work in College Admissions, and I can tell you with certainty that no college or university will look at your middle school/jr. high grades. We are concerned with your performance in high school, whether you attend public, private, parochial or home school. Does not matter, we only look at high school.
If you know that Notre Dame is a school you are interested in, what I would suggest is that you call their Office of Admissions. Talk to one of the admissions staff and ask for guidance about what high school courses you should be taking, what sort of grades and other qualifications you are looking for, and keep in touch with them so that they know you are seriously interested in the school. We love to hear from prospective students and we don't mind at all helping steer you in the right direction to be considered competative for admissions to our institutions.
Give them a call or shoot them an email. They'd love to hear from you. I know I love to hear from prospective students!

You don't need straight A's all your life. I didn't go there but a number of my friends did. Good grades, sure but a well rounded student is more important.
It would probably be best if you called Notre Dame and asked that they send you information as you are a prospective student. You might want to start at their website. I have provided a link to undergraduate admissions below.
If you want to go to Notre Dame you will most likely get in. No college looks at what you did in Junior High, heck few people could even find those records.
Do well in school and keep in touch with ND to see if their admissions requirements change. Remember too that your interests may change and you may find a program at another school that you like so much you would rather go there.
The world is your oyster as they say.

Hi Holly! WHen applying to college, the admissions officers will only look at your secondary school record. They don't care much about how you did before high school. In fact, they won't even know how you did because you will not send those transcripts to them when you apply. Therefore, do well in high school and you have a shot.
Since you are home-schooled you are at a disadvantage because most of the students who apply to top schools will have a number of AP classes under their belts, which you may or may not have. Don't fret, though. THis doesn't mean you won't get in! You may have even taken some AP courses as a homeschooled student. But, do well on your SAT, you will need about a 1200 at least to be competitive. ALso, it depends very much on what you will plan to major in. If most students at Notre Dame are majoring in Pre-med and Engineering --which they are, it's the most popular major there-- then you have a better chance getting in if you aren't planning to major in these areas. Your course of study, I will say, however, is not that important overall.
THe most important thing will be your secondary record. How tough were your classes? What sort of classes did you take, a broad swath? After this they will consider your SAT scores; your recommendations, if you send any--which, btw, should be from a teacher who knows best your academic strengths; your class rank; and the essays they have you to write. After these things they will consider your course of study; if anyone in your family is an alumus; and your extracurriculars. Do you play some obscure, esoteric medieval instrument? That may help your chances when your measured up against another student who has equal scores as you.
Although Notre Dame is an excellent school, I wonder why you want to go there so much. Think about what you would like to major in. Does Notre Dame offer this major? Is it a good fit for you, or what exactly drives you desire to enroll there? You are lucky to live in a country that has hundreds of excellent universities, think about some other schools too. Even though the so-called Ivy Leages offer a lot, american history or economics or biology courses at any university, whether Truman State or Oregon or Princeton, are all quite similar. It's the students then, your future classmates, who raise the quality of classroom discussion, for there are excellent professors across this country and they aren't just at the Ivy Leage schools.
Good luck applying and think about what you would like to study. Research to see who has the best program in this, and then apply to 4-5 schools. 3 reach schools, a mid and a safety school that you know will accept you. G'luck

I think you should post this question in the "Homeschooling" section. There are a lot of ladies there that have some real experience at college admissions with kids who are home schooled. I have none, sorry.
Below is the admissions page link to Notre Dame. I would stress the importance of high ACT or SAT scores. Also I just figured (from their website) that only about 16% of ND freshman applicants get admitted. So work hard and take challenging classes.
Good Luck!

The problem with home schooling is that nobody knows what the grades mean. Maybe mom and dad give A's for everything, no matter what. Or maybe they give B's and C's for everything, no matter what, just to keep you humble. For that matter, nobody really knows how different high schools grade.
Home schooling especially puts a lot more pressure on the standardized exams, like the SAT and the AP exams, because that's the only thing that colleges can trust to tell them what you really know. If you do extremely well on those, then mom and dad must have done well.
So when you get to high school and take these exams, really nail them.

You will need to improve your grades! The competition to get the available seats at Notre Dame is fierce. B's won't do! Read this page from Notre Dame.
