My doctor said my cervix was measuring 3.7 and I'm 21 weeks. She asked me to stop working because my job required me to be on my feet for long hours and lots of lifting. Can my cervix get better with rest? Can I still carry to term with my cervix at 3.7? She wants to check it in 4 weeks.

I believe what you are talking about is the length of your cervix not dilation, correct? This is a measurement that they take when they do an ultrasound to make sure your cervix isn't shortening and preparing for birth. If it shortens it is called funneling and can be a sign of the cervix preparing for childbirth. I think that 3.7 is about normal. I know mine was almost 5cm and I was told it was way longer than it needed to be. I think I remember the tech telling me that 3.5 was about average. I have included a couple of sites that might be useful to you below. You can also google "cervix length" or something along that line and search around for your self. She will probably measure it again in 4 weeks and when she does ask her what it means. I asked so many questions I felt like a total pest, but it made me feel better to feel like I knew what was going on. You will probably be able to go to term if you take care of yourself...

On the other note, being on your feet all day and lifting alot are things that you just don't want to do in the later stages of pregnancy, they can cause you to possibly go into premature labor. I had to quit my waitressing job at about 23 weeks for the same reason and like I said my cervix was 5cm until I was 35 weeks when it finally started to shorten. Don't stress yourself out over it and take this time to rest and get ready for your little one to arrive! I hope this helped to make you feel a little better. If you are really concerned call your doctor and ask again. They are used to nervous mommies!

BED REST!!!! Don't get up if you don't have to. This may sound extreme but yes if you are doing your everyday stuff like vacuuming and making food and washing dishes or clothes yes you could make your cervix get wider. I'm surprised your doctor didn't say something about getting a stitch in your cervix. I've heard of it done but I guess maybe I don't know enough about when they do it. If they don't then I would be sitting... make that laying down on my couch till I have a permanent mold of my body in it. You definately shouldn't be doing any chores. Nothing except for taking care of you and that baby. Everything else can wait. Hopefully your hubby is a good cook!!! :)

Yes, you can carry to term. You will need a lot of rest, though.

Your cervix can close again, I believe, but you're now in a position where you must be horribly careful for the next few months.

With my twins, I dilated to about 3 cm around 28 weeks, and through a combination of bedrest and very good medical care, I still had those girls parked inside me at 36 weeks when they were born by Caesarean.

well that makes no sense because they measure with their fingers so how can it be exactly 3.7? If it is dialating most likely you won't carry to full term however, you can get close. They don't consider you in active labor until you are at a 5 which truly even at the end of pregnancy can take weeks to get to from a 3. you aren't supposed to be lifting when you are pregnant anyway, so now you really need to listen to your doctor for your baby's sake. you can apply for unemployment temporarily until you are able to work again and then you should maybe find a job that is not so strenuous on your body because you are going to be tired from having a new baby to care for and you need to take care of yourself.

I would be on bed rest if I was you

Your cervix might not get better on bed rest, but it might slow down or stop further problems.

You can still carry to term if you get off your feet and stay off of them (only need to get up to go pee or walk from bedroom to your living room at the most - but stay in whatever room is closest to a bathroom)

Good luck and be careful
