Yes, worked in restaurant industry, and if people ask your honest opinion, well, you give it. And, you steer them towards something that more suits their tastes - "Oh, you should really try such and such, if you like chicken!"

If I question whether or not I'll like something, I do ask the waiter or waitress. If they say it's good, I'll ask if they've eaten it, and what does it taste like? Basically if the waiter or waitress says "everything is good here" they are lying. Some things are better than others, and people who work in the restaurant know what is the best and most popular menu items.

Yes.

I've heard waiters and waitresses steer their tables away from the blue plate special (or whatever they were calling it) on several occasions.

Usually it was waitress or waiter doing this for a table that was treating them nicely and as a human being (rather than forgetting that these are the folks who handle your food out of your site) and later giving the same dish a rave review to a tale of folks that were rude & demanding right off the bat.

I've never told someone not to order something, but I've had customers ask me if a certain item is good, and sometimes they ask about food that I don't like or eat, so I tell them the truth. I can't lie.

Yes, I do it all the time. If someone asks my opinion I tell them the truth..."I don't care for that, you might try this" or if it's something I don't like but a lot of other people do I say, "I don't care for it but it is very popular so a lot of people do order it, I just don't like it"

I don't see anything wrong with telling someone I don't like something. Not everybody has the same taste.

Sure, why not?
The server knows the menu and the cooks better than the customer, so if the server gives you an honest opinion about an item, you should trust it.

I do it all the time. I'm a server, and if someone asks my opinion on a certain entree, and I know it's not that great, I tell them honestly. Most people are appreciative of this, I'm not just lying trying to sell them stuff.

I used to waitress, and I would only give my input if they asked. I would be completely honest with them about what meny item wasn't any good.
