What will cause the tapping of a push rod/lifter to sound awfully loud for about 30 mins and the go away and back to normal then repeat again? On an 89 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6? I've been told that it's the lifters which I am going to change on that particular tapping pushrod. NOTE: I did take off the valve covers and looked at the pushrods to see anything unusual with the engine running which I did notitce that the one that was tapping was not totaly wet with oil like the others. Thanks for any help you can provide.

The lifters and cam wear in at a patern and should not be mixed as this will cause a hi wear situation.
The lifters should have a convex foot (bottom) if not then replace the cam and lifters as a set.

The tic as you discribe sounds like a bent push rod. as the rod rotates into the angle that coduses the tic then out of this angle . check the rod against a flat surfice rolling it should show the bend or worpage.

Why not just buy a whole new set of lifters and then not have to worry with it? It won't take that much more time to replace them all. It sounds like you have a collasped lifter or sticking lifter. When it heats up, it may free up for a while or else the parts expand and takes up the slack in the lifters

Good luck either way you go.

It sounds like the lifter is going bad or the oil pressure is low. The lifer pumps oil throught the push rod to lube the rockers arm and valve.

Hi Lioness, I tried to find "objectified" and "objectification" in the dictionary and no joy. Well, I'm not exactly sure I understand your queston, but think I might have an idea. Anyway, have you ever heard of the "bell curve"? It's a curve that is shaped like a bell and does a good job of representing statistics. As for beauty, at one end of the curve we have the least attractive and at the other end the most. The same would be true for income ... poorest on one side and richest on the other. In the middle of the bell we have all the average folks. I think what you're saying is true, but just simply a fact of life. We have the full spectrum for both genders. As for why guys don't protest ... I guess they realize that it's just the way things are and protests are unlikely to change anything. Hope this helps!

they need adjusting . get a repair manual at the store and it will tell you how to adjust them . it might be that you might have to replace your oil pump too .that is a real problem with these german engines. here is a website: http://www.carsurvey.org/viewcomments_review_21811.html
