because they are men and men don't carry umbrellas, umbrellas are for females. It's an old gender type casting.

Why would that be embarrassing? I live in Vancouver, BC...it rains here all the time and everyone has an umbrella. No one here seems to notice you unless you have that wet puppy dog look.

When I was a kid I felt dumb carrying an umbrella. Now I don't. if it's raining I don't want to get my hair wet. Too many hair products and it would be horrible to get all that gel, and hairspray wet.
