G'day,
Lindsay.... have you actually been in Werribee? I've been living in Point Cook, which is 10min driving away from Werribee and have never smelt anything bad. Maybe if you stop halfway in Sunshine, then you'll smell something, but not in Werribee. I've got so many visitors, family & friends and never got any complaints or comments about smell.
Now... as much as I want to promote Werribee Zoo, I can't justify the travel (abt 15min from the CBD) for just visiting 2 places in Werribee (the zoo and mansion). Whereas Melbourne Zoo is pretty close and after that you can go to see the other parts of Melbourne like Botanical garden, Rialto/Eureka towers, Victoria Market etc. Both of the zoos are good, but it's just a matter of what to see afterwards.
Good luck.

Werribee zoo is much better than Melbourne Zoo. Sure Melbourne has more animals but the experience of seeing the open range zoo is just amazing. If you go to the Werribee zoo you can also visit the nearby Werribee Park Mansion.

They are both excellent, but if you are staying in or near Melbourne central, the Melbourne Zoo is only a few minutes from the city. It is a world class facility with everything you would expect from a famous zoo and more.
Werribee is some distance from the city.
I can definitely rescommend Melbourne Zoo as a great place to spend a day in Melbourne.
Werribee is very good, but from personal experience, I'd have to say that Melbourne is the better option.
Whichever you choose, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Have a great time!

If you're staying in Melbourne (city area) I'd go to the Melbourne Zoo, Werribee is a bit far.
Werribee also has all the sewerage farms out there, and it smells. Seriously.

I would go to Werribee Zoo - it's like a day out on a safari. I went to Melbourne Zoo a few months ago and it isn't the best zoological facility in the world - quite old fashioned and plain - it's in desperate need of some kind of renovation in my opinion.
In fact, i'd give them both a miss and head to Australia Zoo - tons of fun and you can meet heaps of animals!

Steven, I used to travel between Sydney and Melbourne, and never heard anything adverse from Melbourne people about Sydney, maybe te only time, when there was a football match or cricket match, something like that, between the two states, but that went on with anything, even that football match you call the State of Oranges or something like that. In all I found Melbourne people pretty cool, even though it wasn't for me, one week in Melbourne at a time was more tan enough for me.

Melbourne Zoo. It is magnificent. It and Taronga Park in Sydney are the top two zoos in the country. Healesville sanctuary is worthwhile if you have the time and ability to get a little out of Melbourne.

At this time of the year,I wouldn't go to either. The animals are usually asleep or hiding during the day, as they are not caged, but in a more natural environment, which makes it difficult to view them.
while this is better for the animals, it won't be worthwhile for your limited time.
Try Southbank, it has a bit more activity, if that's what you want.
If you want to see animals, go to Africa, it's
better than Australia for wildlife.
Just a suggestion.
