Meteorites break into smaller pieces all the time when coming into the atmosphere. The pieces burn up separately, with the exception of the occasional chunk that reaches the ground.

You may have been asking about something splitting the earth in half, but it would not be a meteorite. And there are no comets, minor planets, or asteroids that are large enough to do that kind of damage.

The Earth is a bony old chunk of rock. Don't lose sleep worrying about it.

a meteor is only the flash of light from a tiny particle entering earth's atmosphere, it would be impossible for one to split the earth in half.

now if you meant asteroid or comet, then maybe, but even a huge comet or asteroid would smash into the earth breaking it into many tiny pieces not cutting it in half. most of the pieces would remain in the same place and eventually re coalesce into a planet about the same size as earth. a similar event created the moon. and that was an object about the size of mars.

We all die, or life would continue on in two worlds or space stations, either way we're dumb for not paying attention to the news and spending our last few minutes on Yahoo answers... Why?Uh-Ohh, is a meteor going to strike Earth?

The atmosphere will break, causing us to die of the stuff the atmosphere protects us from. One wide of the earth will dift off to the sun, making people die of heat. The otherside will go too far away from the sun causing people to freeze to death. Anyway, what ever happens, everyone will die in the end.

To split the earth in half, it would have to be huge and nothing would be left alive on earth.

No one would have to pay their student loans back, we can stop worrying about global warming, and no one will care who the next American Idol will be - since we'd all be dead.

someone may survive if they were in space @that time and would repopulate the new "moon". That is how our current moon was formed. maybe... yea, yea....
