Try washing them with a cup of vinegar in the water. You could also let them presoak in a mixture of water and vinegar. If the stiffness is in the armpits, you could try dabbing them with peroxide. The peroxide will help dissolve the "biological" stains from sweat. After you wash them once with vinegar and/or peroxide re-wash them with the regular cycle before you dry it. Dry it on medium heat and make sure they are completely dry before you take them out.

To obtain softness you MUST dry them in a dryer and NOT on a clothes line. Thats what may be making them stiff.
