Back in 1949 coins minted at the Philadelphia mint had no mint marks. Starting in 1980 all coins except the cent have a P mint mark for that mint. It was a tradition with cent collectors and the mint ,for the cent to never have a mint mark for the Philadelphia mint, so they left it off. Of all the coin denominations the cent has been struck from 1793-2007 at the Philadelphia mint missing only one year 1815 and that was due to the war of 1812 and the country we bought the blanks from was the country we were at war with, England. Coins are fun to collect, but you can also learn about a country by it's coinage or lack off it.

Some coins do bear the P mint mark for Pennsylvania but many do not. The ones that do not have mint marks are also from Pennsylvania.
