if your thoughts always go to the person then absence make the heart fonder if there are no thoughts then out of sight out of mind

When it is 'out of sight' your mind instantly draws its image and you start becoming fond of that. Out of sight is NOT out of mind for those who are not selfish.

ive found absence leads to "bad times" being forgotten while "good times" take much much longer to fade. leading to longing for a situation that was unhealthy though u dont see it that way anymore

overall, i think it's -- out of sight, out of mind -- especially with romantic relationships. for me, closeness is essential to having a healthy relationship, BOTH physical & emotional closness are necessary for me.
