My friend came to me in a fit of panic, and fear. Her dad is an alcoholic and is pretty much crazy. He threatens to kick them out, and sometimes threatens to leave. He refuses to take his meds, and he comes home and screams at my friend and her mom. Her mom is too afraid to do anything, and she won't call the cops or leave, because without him, there's no money and my friend would get extrememly depressed if she couldn't go to school and see her friends. Without their house, their lives would be an even bigger mess than it is now. So she came to me and now I don't know what to do! I don't know what to say to her because it's never happened to me.

I'd have her stay with me in a heartbeat, but you see, I'm only 14, and if my parents don't like someone, they can't come over, and my parents don't like her at all because her and i have gotten into a lot of fights in the past. She has a place to stay with one of my friends, but her and her mom are too afraid to leave.

Her mom may not want to call the police, but nothing is stopping her from calling. Minors are allowed to call. She might also try calling social services since this is abusive behavior. Calling them won't result in someone going to jail.

Your friend needs to take care of herself. Its too bad that her mother won't do anything. This type of situation happens so often. Her father has gotten them to the point where they believe that they can't do anything. They have to believe that they can and must do something. If they don' the abuse will only continue and it will get worse. The farther her father gets into the cycle of addiction the more out of control he will feel and the more he will try to control them.
If he has been physically abusive she can get an order for protection.
Her father needs help. He needs to be intervened on and enter a treatment program. He cannot do it for himself. A crisis needs to be created in order to begin the action. The longer they let things go the worse it will get. They have to take a risk. If no one does anything everything will stay the same. She could contact a professional to setup an intervention. If you are a good friend, try to convince her to take a risk. Her intention is not to hurt him, it is to get help for him.
