I have a Black & Decker 14v cordless drill (used maybe once or twice). When I run it, it looks like there are sparks inside visible through the slots on the side. Is this normal?

The drill runs on a permanent magnet, DC motor. The motor has spring loaded brushes that push against the commutator and spark when it rotates.

It's normal.

I notice sparks more on B&D drills and Dewalts (no surprise as B&D owns Dewalt now). NEVER seen any sparks from any of my 3 Panasonic drills. You get what you pay for. Just be aware they spark and be smart around gas cans or anything else that can light up.

yes. They are where the contact brushes on the motor frame touch the commutator on the spinning motor rotor. They indicate a little roughness in the contacts (making the brushes bounce back with a little spark). They are harmless and common.

It comes from frayed windings on the rotor striking the brushes as it rotates. It is normal but not for a newer drill.
