8/5 means that 8 is divided by 5. Write that out as a long division problem, including a decimal point and a couple of zeros after the 8, with 5 as the divisor.
You get 1.6 for the result of that division, which is what you are looking for.
The other way to deal with it is to multiply both sides of that equation by 5. Then you do not have any fractions to worry about.

You do not need to turn the fraction into a whole number to solve the problem, but I will explain it anyway.
First, though, let's solve your problem. You are saying that the store sold x CDs and (8/5)x DVDs, so that's right. Because you are dealing with fifths, you can write the x (which is really 1x, right?) as (5/5)x.
So:
(5/5)x + (8/5)x = 273
Now, because you have a common denominator, you can add the numerators:
(13/5)x = 273
To solve for x, first multiply by the denominator:
13x = 1365
Then divide by the (old) numerator:
x = 105
That's the number of CDs. The question is asking about DVDs:
(8/5)(105) = 168
If you want to turn the fraction into a decimal number, just divide 8 by 5. 5 goes into 8 one time, leaving 3 behind. So, your number will be 1 followed by a decimal point and then 3 divided by 5:
1.6

Since 8 (numerator) is bigger than 5 (denominator) the 8/5 will be a decimal number. It is same as 1.6. or stated differently same as one and three fifth.
You do not need to convert it into a whole number to solve the equation. x+8/5x =273 is same as 13/5x=273 then x = 1365/13 then x= 105.
Another way to solve the equation: x+1.6x=273 then 2.6 x=273 then x=2730/26 then x = 105.
Good luck!
If x = 105 then 8/5 of 105 is 168. The sum of 105 + 168 is 273.

that may work.....
all it is is reasoning: how many times does 5 go into 8?
answer: 1
how much is left over?
answer: 3
so your fraction should look like 1 and 3/5, or 1.6
thats how you turn the 8/5 into a whole number or decimal.
i think the rest of the equation goes like this:
then, divide the 273 by 1.6, and you'll get the number of how many CD's were sold. the number of CD's should be represented by X. then, plug X back into the equation you wrote down, and if the answer equals 273, you have the correct answer!
i hope this helped, and i'm sorry if it doesnt!

8/5 = 5/5+3/5 = 1 3/5 = 1.6
Your first step is correct
x+8/5x = 273
since 1x = 5/5x then 5/5x+8/5x=273
13/5x=273
multiply both sides by 5 means 13x=1365
so x=105 CDs
since total was 273 = 273-105 = 168 DVDs
you can check this by 105 CDs * 1.6 = 168 DVDs

Hi,
To convert 8/5 into a whole number, you need to multiply the fraction by "the least common denominator", which is the number 40. (that's the smallest number that both 8 and 5 go into without any remainder).
You have to solve for 8/5x to get the number of DVDs. x would just give you the number of CDs (the smaller number).

it would be 1 and 3/5
you divide 8 by 5 which would= 1.6
.6 is the remainder.
.6 is 6/10 so you would just change that into lowest terms which would= 3/5
like this: 6 (divided by 2)= 3
10 (divided by 2)= 5
3/5
to check your answer, (1 3/5) you would do the following steps:
multiply 5 and 1 ( 5x1) Answer= 5
add 3 to 5 (3+5) Answer=8
and that would give you 8/5 (your original problem)

d + c = 273 where 8d/5 = c
=> d + 8d/5 = 273
=> 5d + 8d = 1365
=> 13d = 1365
=> d = 105
and c = 8d/5 = 8*105/5 = 168
so 105 dvd and 168 cd sold

Did you sleep through the whole 6th grade?
You are better off going the other way (BTW, x is the number of CDs, please remember that). Then
13/5 x = 273
Since 273 = 21*13 (sneaky how they got 273, isn't it?), x= 105 and the number of DVDs is 168.

x is the amount of CDs as the dvds sold = 8/5 the cd sales (if i'm reading the question right)
so solve for x -> 5/5x + 8/5x = 273
13/5x = 273
x = (5*263)/13
then plug x in to 8/5x
