Maybe they think you look vaguely South American (mestiza or mullato) and if you just happen to live in a place that is likely to have many Mexicans, that would be the first to come to their minds. Don't be upset about it (unless they are being discriminatory).
I'm a half-breed too, and people who see me with my mother can easily believe I am her child, but have a harder time connecting me with my father. That's just the way it is. I have been mistaken for Canadian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Italian, Spanish, Croatian and South American. I think it's funny, especially the Japanese/Chinese, which happened when I had removed my glasses and was squinting.

Being at the considerable disadvantage of not actually seeing you in person, I can only surmise that you actually look Mexican. Either that, or you enjoy wearing sombreros and sleeping under a cactus whilst bashing a pinata. In which case you could be accused of false advertising.

I've been asked if I had down syndrome before! Try having that problem! (I have kind of a round face, and my I.Q. is 140, go figure). If that's you in the picture, I'm thinken it's maybe cause your hair is really dark. Or they were just bein rude.
