Don't jump in with self riteous "you biggot, racist..." that's not what I'm talking about.

I have observed that an overwhelming number (97%?) of "spanish prisoner" type confidence scams from the cotinent of Africa showing up in my email box.

Who are these people? Are they Africans? Are they crooks who are hiding in Africa?

We've got all the money and they don't. Makes sense, don't you think?

It's also easier to set up scams like this in certain African countries because their governments lack the resources to police effectively Internet crime. It's a haven for scams in the same way that Monte Carlo and Lichenstein are havens for tax avoiders.

Generally, the poorer the country the less effective is the control of fraud, corruption and other forms of scamming - and they usually don't have reciprocal arrangements with the US, UK and other Western countries for the prosecution of the scammers. Enough Westerners fall for the scams to make it a rather lucrative business. As to whether they are all African, my best guess is probably not.

There seems to be a large group of people in Nigeria (?) who are scamming people. I think it was Dateline that did a program on it. I wonder the same thing. They tell single women that they want to marry them and take their money and disappear.

They are Nigerian residents, blacks, whites, men and women from the look of it. And they are clever, or most people are really stupid. I think it's the latter. My email is yahoo and I suddenly started getting tons of spam! Most of it goes into my bulk folder, but I'd like to know where it's coming from.

Chances are they are not on Africa. They are not going to display the real location of themselves. That's like ratting your self out. You can never tell anything by an e-mail, especially if you dont even know who is sending them to you. It could be a polish person in Poland, saying she/he is in Africa. Best thing to do is empty the e-mail. I never open an e-mail from someone I dont know or have talked to. Same goes with websites, i only open there e-mail when it has to do with a place i have signed up.

The infamous Nigerian Bank Scam is a case in point.
Recent estimates are that it is their major industry now.
Further suspicions are that government leaders are behind it.

I've seen it, too, & I'm pretty disgusted with it. I've also seen scammers from the UK.
